BillytheKid Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 (edited) Name: Freight Steam Train Set No.: 7727 Theme: LEGO / SYSTEM / Trains / 12v / Train Set Year: 1983 Pieces: 562 Minifigs: 2 Price (when it was in stores): USD 95,-$ (which equals about EUR 83,-€) Price nowadays (2d hand): USD 400,-$ (which equals about EUR 300,-€) Why I think it's a forgotten train? Everybody properly know the 7730, where I write a review from in near future. The 7730 is also easier to get your hands on form ebay or bricklink. And it has the famous red 12v motor and black windows. With these 3 reasons, prices of 2d hands went sky high. Even the sky is limited, but not the price of this set. That's why I bought a 7730 and rebuild this to a 7727. In this way you've a red 12v motor and can sell those 1x1x2 windows. Click on pic for bigger one Click on pic for bigger one Click on pic for bigger one It has 3 wagons, a little fork truck to load or unload the goods. Also a little circle track included. You had only to buy a speedregulator with it, to have the fun. With the connect rods, it looks very realistic. Only bad there wasn't a little tender for coal or wood. Isn't that little red car cute? Love the way how it's designed and transported. This is the second model you can make of the bricks: Hmm, need to build that little tractor . For a diehard 12v fan of grey area, you must have this train. If you only want a few sets of this train, leave this one be for what it is. Before I end this review, first some pic's of the inside of the train and wagons: Click on pic for bigger one Click on pic for bigger one The yellow truck belows to the set The red one, the design found on brickshelf . Click on pic for bigger one In my layout it has the wagon of set 7838: Click on pic for bigger one Click on pic for bigger one Playability: 8/10 (It takes time it the little fork truck has loaded all 5 crates on the train) Design: 8/10 (It look realistic, but I miss a little tender behind it.) Price (when it was in stores): 7/10 (Only missing the speedregulator.) Price nowadays (2d hand): 2/10 (300,-€ to get your hand on this one, ridiculous.) Overall: 8/10 (It looks like a real steam engine and lots of playability.) Edited November 14, 2010 by AFOL12v Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Yes - a very classic 12V steam train. Panda strikes again! What I particularly like about this set is it's mid-sized 12V black DB steam locomotive. I say "mid-sized", because I tried MOCing this engine with old instructions, and the engine came out much larger than I anticipated, larger than the 9V engine in 3225 Classic Train (it's sad when I can start remembering the set numbers without looking ). Here's my modified 9V version of the engine: LINK MOCing it once again with some additional modifications and different colors resulted in my TTCE, Mining Train: LINK So, I find the engine design very useful for creating a classic train, just wish I had a few of those classic black train doors. Panda: I find your 12V collection truly amazing, and how I wish that I had some of these classic train sets. The prices for these sets, even used, are enormous. I would like to ask you one question. As I don't own any of these 12V sets, are the train wheels larger than the old spoked red wheels from Lego. These: Thanks for sharing these classic train set reviews. Quote
BillytheKid Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 There are the exact same size. Only wheels are different. Quote
Big Cam Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Nice review, I wish the pictures were linked at a decent size but fun review. Quote
BillytheKid Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 What you mean, decent size? I kept the pic's small in topic's, otherwise it can take some time when pic's are loaded when looking at this topic. You can click on pic to get a bigger pic to see the details. Quote
