Buying LEGO in Denmark

I'm leaving for Denmark via Malmö in a couple of days. I will spend 1 day in Malmö, 4 days in Copenhagen, 1 day in Billund, and 2 days at the LEGO Fan Weekend.

I was hoping to score some exclusives and/or larger sets at decent prices (LEGO is incredibly expensive in Serbia). Imagine my surprise when I finally checked the Danish Shop@Home today and found out that everything is 20-30% more expensive than normal European prices! I am now majorly depressed, as the LEGO shopping experience was one of the major reasons why I decided to go to the Fan Weekend in the first place.

I know there is a decent PaB in Billund, but, again, it seems that it's not as good as the ones in Germany. I'll certainly spend some money there, but PaB was not going to be my primary focus - with the relatively recent arrival of LUGBULK I now have so many unsorted bricks that I'm not sure I can handle more.

Can anyone recommend any shops in Malmö or Copenhagen that carry LEGO and perhaps offer it at a discount? I am looking in particular for the LOTR sets, Kingdoms Joust, modular buildings, and the Vampire Castle or Haunted House.

Also, are there any good and cheap BL stores in Copenhagen that will allow me to pick up the order in person and pay for it?

Whenever I was in Copenhagen, I checked the PaB wall for some goodies - it actually depends a lot on what you build and hence what you're looking for. Price-wise, there might be some 'sales' with partly discounted LEGO, but it's not something I've seen regularly there (I remember some sales from late July/early August in Bilka supermarket). As for Bricklink I can't help, as I've never made an order from DK.

Since you're much closer to Germany than Denmark, I'd strongly suggest you try to plan a visit to Munich's LEGO store instead. There's a direct train there from Belgrade, and if you plan it as a 2-3 day trip, you could make it to Gunzburg Legoland as well. German prices are 'friendlier' than Danish, and in Gunzburg there is a great selection of bricks (although pricier than in LEGO store).

I'm going to exhibit at the LEGO Fan Weekend and I'm hoping to buy some cheap LEGO there.

Last year many of the Danish bricklink dealers were at LEGO Fan Weekend. I think many of them will bee at this years LEGO Fan Weekend too.

(I remember some sales from late July/early August in Bilka supermarket).

I (and many other Danish AFOLs) bought this years selection of LEGO sets, when there was 40% discount of LEGO in Bilka in the early August. But sadly there was only discount that week in the early August.

LEGO in Denmark is so insanely expensive that I only ever buy it at 40-50 % (or more, if possible!) off. Except for maybe a collectible minifig here or there, or a vintage set.

It is indeed dissapointing that even though it's manufactured here, we pay some of the highest prices in the world.

I understand that things have improved since then but I suspect you're better off shopping for LEGO in other countries. The posts above confirm my suspicions.

I feel sorry for Danish FOLs. Denmark is the home of LEGO but TLG doesn't serve its domestic market particularly well.

Availability has definitely improved since you were here. Any toy store which isn't speciality (such as toy stores selling old-fashioned wooden toys and suchlike), as well as all the larger supermarkets, will have several shelves of Lego. Even my local grocery store (which is small enough to lack such luxuries as plastic bags and ham that are discernible from each other) has a shelf of small Lego sets.

That said, I've been having problems finding Lego in France, Italy, Germany and Britain anywhere outside of Lego's own stores and Hamley's toy store. Perhaps it's just difficult to find things in an unfamiliar environment, so we all think it's difficult to find Lego in other countries.

Interesting point about having to know the local market. In the UK, apart from LEGO brand stores, try John Lewis department stores. Argos and the Entertainer aren't bad, and some branches of WH Smiths and Tescos are decent. I understand that Toys R Us are pretty good for LEGO, but can't say from personal experience; I've only ever been to TRU in the US where the selection was good and some of the prices were great.
