"This thing" seems to be some of maintainance/refuling device. It was in the movie.

The vaporator was in the movie too.

I actually found what that thing is, it is an energy droid of some sort, and although there is no wookiepedia entry of it yet, there is a yodapedia entry(dutch). I found it in the new Episode I: The Expanded Visual Dictionary.
