Ayden Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Personally, I prefer the hp troll. It just looked more LEGO. The fantasy one looks like play mobile, or some fisher price toy like imaginex. Which do you prefer? NOTE: I may just be missing it, but I cant seem to find the "poll" option... Quote
Aanchir Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I personally think the Fantasy Era troll looks more like LEGO than the HP one. Its face decoration is more like a regular minifigure face (minifigures shouldn't have noses...), its body and legs are angular like a minifigure or typical LEGO animal rather than overly rounded, and of course it has way more posability and fewer awkward points where the gaps between pre-assembled sections show (like the Harry Potter troll's chest and ankles). The textile "clothing" of the Harry Potter troll was also awkward and out-of-place next to ordinary minifigures with simple printed or molded clothes. The Fantasy Era troll also has far more parts and connection points, making it more versatile. The only thing that I think makes the Harry Potter troll any more like regular LEGO than the Fantasy Era troll is its cylindrical head and lack of fingers. Obviously in some respects it may have been limited because it was tied to a license, but overall I think design standards in general improved a lot between it and Fantasy-Era Castle, and if the Harry Potter set featuring the troll were released for the first time today I'm sure many aspects of its design would be a lot closer to the quality of the Fantasy-Era troll and it would be made to fit in with minifigures a lot better. Gryphon Ink Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Personally, I prefer the hp troll. It just looked more LEGO. The fantasy one looks like play mobile, or some fisher price toy like imaginex. Which do you prefer? Personally, I think they both have problems, but the Fantasy Era troll is far cuter. And I've always hated the Harry Potter movies' version of a troll. It looked incredibly ugly - and not ugly in a good way, like LOTR trolls, just stupid ugly - and not much better in Lego form. If anything, the Fantasy Era troll's big problem is that it's TOO cute. You don't want to kill it, you want to take it home and give it a saucer of milk. Quote
brickmack Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) I like the fantasy troll better, it more closely resembles my childhood ideas of what a troll would look like. The HP troll is just weird looking... It would be nice if both had moveable legs though. If anything, the Fantasy Era troll's big problem is that it's TOO cute. You don't want to kill it, you want to take it home and give it a saucer of milk. Heh, I kinda agree with that (Up until I notice the big club) NOTE: I may just be missing it, but I cant seem to find the "poll" option... CMP Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Fantasy troll. It's a shame, though - if they made a new troll for Harry Potter today, like Aanchir said, it would probably be better. The general shape of the HP one I prefer, but it's too immobile. And, well, c'mon, those Fantasy trolls are too adorable to even think about attacking. Quote
davee123 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Definitely agree that the Fantasy Troll is way better in all respects. The only good thing I can think of about the HP troll is that the head is useful for making zombies. But hands-down Fantasy Troll-- he's way more iconic and LEGO-ish than the HP troll, he's WAY more posable, he's reasonably configurable, and can do things like holding standard minifigs. DaveE Quote
Brickity Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 The HP troll does it for me. The fantasy one is too blocky and chunky IMO. Quote
Dwellington Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I like things about both of them, but I think I like more things the Fantasy troll has going. If the Harry Potter troll had two arm joints and a less ugly face printing (it only vaguely looks like the movie design, even!) I think I'd be much happier with it. He's a big lunky idiot, and I think that's conveyed quite well. I don't actually have a Fantasy troll, but I dig the exaggerated, chunky aesthetics. He's not necessarily as stupid as the Harry Potter troll (less duuuuuh, more bad grammer an' spellin' and tings like dat) but he's several times more brutish. Also, there's the sheer variety to consider. The Fantasy troll comes in a couple of colors, and has exposed studs all over him. Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I prefer the fantasy era one. It is more like the trolls we have living locally that I remember playing around and with when I was a kid. They were fun, a bit dumb but in a kind of 'old man of the woods' way rather than actually stupid. They were very world wise if you get what I mean, show them an i-pad and they would try and eat it, but get them to live in the wild with no supplies and by their own wits and they were fine. The HP troll just does not look like a troll. It just looks to be some dis-preportioned doll with a very small head. I am pretty sure if I showed a picture of the HP troll to the trolls who live near my mother's house they would not recognise it as a toy that was representing their species, whereas the fantasy era one they probably would. (Not that I've ever seen them play with toys of course, but I mean in the way that a cat or dog recognises itself in the mirror.) Quote
fyrmedhatt Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) I'm for the HP troll, even if it's far from perfect. Trolls are supposed to be big, dumb, awkward and scary. The fantasy troll simply looks too muscular and athletic. The HP troll has that awkwardness I'd expect from a troll, even if the head is too tiny, it's menacing due too it's sheer size and not his Mr. Olympia like body. I grew up with trolls in fairytales and the were constantly outmaneuvered by witty and agile heroes, and I think the fantasy troll seems too smart and athletic for that to happen. For good reference on Trolls I'd recommend watching the Troll Hunter, which is a great move, or read the fairytales by Asbjørnsen and Moe. Edited January 22, 2012 by fyrmedhatt Quote
Jargo Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 The fantasy troll in dark tan would be my preference though I'm looking forward to the LOTR troll. I've hated the HP troll since I first clapped eyed on it. It might be the face or the colour or the horrible construction or the cloth clothing. It's hideous. The fantasy troll has a kind of puppy dog look to its face but is at least blocky and heavy looking. Mean and dangerous. Quote
Palathadric Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 The Fantasy troll. Always the Fantasy troll. The Fantasy toll looks cute, but at the same time big, powerful, and fierce (alright, I'll admit, I don't know how that even makes sense). The HP troll looks in my opinion less "Legolike" than the HP one, and just looks boring, in my opinion, in general. Here's the difference: I like the Fantasy troll and I hate the HP one. ...no, seriously. Quote

It reminds me of a more fairy tale troll opposed to the cute ogre. My only complaint is the left arm not being able to move. I am curious to see what the LOTR troll will look like. The images I saw simply displayed a lumpy white thing with arms, but the mini figures shown to come in the set looked more like the troll from the film. Quote
Weil Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Greatly prefer the fantasy troll to the harry potter one. Quote
Pingles Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Seems like they could have upped the scale a bit (each is miniaturized it seems) and made them out of pieces. Quote
Oky Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 The HP Troll was just badly done. That ugly chest, the immobile left arm, the lack of printing... Plus the clothes kept sliding off during play, and the head just looked so ugly and small. The latter was probably intended, but still. Therefore, I'd have to vote for the Fantasy troll. And yes, it will be interesting to compare the final design of the LOTR troll with these. By the way, you're a vassal, so you can't make polls, but you can always ask a mod to add one for you. Quote
JackJonespaw Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I too like the Fantasy Troll better. It's well done and more detailed. Quote
Palathadric Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 The Fantasy Troll looks much more toy-like, let me say and, honestly, more how I think a troll should look, very big and muscular, but almost too big that he gets in the way of himself. The HP troll looks like a squirt with a big belly. I still can't get over the horribly ugly face, it's not impressively fierce at all. The fantasy troll has a nice blend of toy-cuteness and also troll-fierceness, but that's just me talking. I would like to see what kind of trolls they come out with for the Lord of the Rings line, but suffice it to say, I hope they look closer to the Fantasy Troll than to the HP one. Again, just my opinion, although I think the majority seem to favour, if even just slightly, the Fantasy troll. ...If you can get a poll going though... Personally, I prefer the hp troll. It just looked more LEGO. The fantasy one looks like play mobile, or some fisher price toy like imaginex. Honestly the only thing I find "Lego-looking" about the HP troll is the head, but then again, I don't own either of them. Although, from the picture, I can't say I am too disappointed to not own the HP one. Quote
wokajablocka Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 (edited) I like the HP troll as the really looks ugly just like the movie although I do agree with Oky's comment below. From the prelim pics TLOR troll is going to be great (the mines set looks the best so far) and going to look much better that both of the current trolls. If you look at the reference pic here the troll from HP is a very good representation from the film. Small head, blue body and large arms and legs. Edited January 24, 2012 by wokajablocka Quote

Palathadric Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 I have to admit that that HP troll does look like the one in the movie, but man the movie one is sick. Seriously. It doesn't make me like it anymore, and I think it really doesn't have much of the "toy-like" look. All-in-all, I think a troll should look a lot more like the fantasy one than the HP one. The Fantasy one looks more like a beast. The HP one looks like a tall guy with a fat belly. Fantasy any day, fantasy! Quote

Yeah, the harry potter one is a good lego version of the movie troll. I personally don't own the Harry Potter one, but just on image alone, I vote Fantasy. That being said, the fantasy one isn't perfect either. I'd love for it to have a movable head at the least, and the hands don't hold things as well as I'd like. Not that these issues will stop me from buying reasonably priced trolls if I find any. Quote
