SirSven7 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Hello Again All I know it has been a great deal of time since I last created one of these; for that I can only apologise. Well its finally here, my Forestman's article. The Lego Forestmen Sets 1987-1990 For those who don't know what I am up to (I expect thats most of you ), I am reviewing every set released for Castle, so far I have done Crusaders, Black Falcon's and Forestmen's, so below are the links to the other two. The Lego Castle Crusaders Sets 1984-1992 The Lego Black Falcon Sets 1984-1992 I hope you all enjoy it, and feedback would be most welcome as any comments give me the fuel I need to continue (it makes me happy). Enjoy and Thanks Cheers Quote
Zeya Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Thank you for writing that up. I really enjoyed reading the Forestmen article in particular. It's making me nostalgic for the days of my youth (born in the early 80s so I grew up with these themes). I really like how you point out the unique features of the sets and all the minute trivia. And the instruction scans with the alternate builds are a treat too. Thanks! Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Thanks for the interesting article 'SirSven7', this year I could see Kingdom's heading down the Forestmen path with the Blacksmith and Mill sets....the Dragon's attacking humble country folk, but what was missing the Forestmen to come to their aid....i.e. just like Robin Hood ! And I really would like a 6077....that looks too COOL ! Brick On Write On 'SirSven7' ! Quote
TheLegoDr Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I always loved the Forestmen theme. I had a good chunk of the sets, but never quite all of them. I do adore seeing my old friends lined up in a row on my shelf. Great read. The history is always interesting coming from you. Keep up the good work. Quote
SirSven7 Posted October 28, 2011 Author Posted October 28, 2011 Thanks guys The comments have been really nice, I too was born in the 80's and as such all the older sets have a special place in my Lego heart (especially the forestmen). I can see the kingdoms sets going down a similar road, and in honesty they are (to me) the best sets since those of the 80s and early 90s (excluding the MMV as thats the best set ever). 6077 is a cool set and I was lucky enought to get that one first when I got my lego sets (I was about four at the time, it was christmas and my parents got me that and King’s Mountain Fortress 6081), as robin hood was big on tv back in 1990 and I liked them, I still have the whole of both sets and all the figs (and instructions, for both sets), thought sadly one of the visors (for set 6081) broke when I was young (and I can no longer find the madiens hat) so that has been lost in time. Still considering how young I was I class that as a win I remember making my forestmen save the lady in the castle set and taking her back to the fortress (with the loss of a few good me obviously), ahh good times . I picked up a few more over the course of my childhood, but when I came out of my dark age (a couple of years ago) I had to find the rest, personaly I like the crossing set more but they're all great to me. Next up are the Black Knights, I hope they're as well recieved (im starting to research and rebuild my sets now). Quote
Hartfan Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 I really like forestmen theme. I miss those old times and great sets. I was born in late 70s so those are my favourite moments from my childhood. Great article. Your blog is really interesting. Quote
Gareth Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I like the articals, this is my Favourite time for castles the 1980's it seems like it was the best time for Lego in a whole too!. They are very informative and I like the shots of the box photo's, shame they didn't put the photos on the instruction sheet. Good work Quote
Artanis I Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 As my favourite colour was green, these guys were definitely my favourite. The Forestmen's Crossing set was only available in USA, I didn't even know it (or the female minifig) existed until I happened upon it on Bricklink. Quote
Ardelon Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I love your reviews, SirSven7! I hope we won't have to wait as long for the next one! I'm not too keen on the forestmen myself, I prefer Wolpack or Dark Forest as outlaw factions. I find the forestmen too bright and clean, or not rugged enough. Though I guess that in their time they were pretty revolutionary compared to the classic factions. I'm just surprised TLG didn't use the new pirate heads on the figs along with the wench, and waited until Wolfpack. Quote
Augen Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Great reviews, thanks. I didn't realise that Lego had released as many sets as that. It would be really good to see a revival of the theme. Quote
SirSven7 Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Thanks again everyone I love these old sets, I am a little sad I only have a couple more before I have too look at Fright Knight's (still better than the jelly bean knights that came later). I also wish the later sets had construction ideas on the back, i think it is something LEGO should bring back as it highlights the creativity of the sets. The Crossing set was only in the USA (I will add that), it was also one of the last sets for Forestmen, I have no idea where I got mine (though I do have two uncles that did (and still do) live in the US, so that might be soemthing to do with it, as they visited twice a year ) Don't worry my next review is already half done (I had nothing to do yesterday) and should be up by friday at the latest, sadly it is not wolfpack or dark forest just yet, but they will be looked at soon. I think they didn't change the heads because they didn't want the sets to clash with older ones, they did the same with the crusaders and falcon's, even though both had minifigs released in the early 90's neither one had any other style for there males heads (the crusaders princess in mountian fortress also has a printed face like the forstman's wench). A revival would be most welcome, More Forestmen I say (however we are seeing a falcon for the first time since 1992 next year, twenty years later, so I guess anything is possible) Quote
