Condor Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 (edited) I picked these up today from somebody that had advertised two huge vikings sets. They mentioned their son had put them together for a school project and had glued the pieces together. When I got there and saw the sets, I thought I might be able to get the parts and glue off with acetone so I bought the lot. After doing some research at home though, it seems acetone and Lego don't mix. Obviously, they were not for a school project and seems to have been one of those displays they put up in the Lego aisles. The Bionicle baseplate has a sticker in the back that says: Lego System A/SProduct Name: Bio Modelplate TRU Documentation No: 4282824 Production Date: 04-05 (MM-YY) Indoor Use I would leave them as is and displayed them in my office, but the kid had already started taking some of the pieces off and some of the pieces are broken. Some of the parts were glued with rubber cement and that comes off pretty easily, but the other stuff is glued with some kind of super glue, which is probably why the pieces broke off. Any ideas on what I can do with it? Thanks! Edited October 2, 2010 by Condor Quote
Big Cam Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Yikes, I hate to be no help, but I don't know of a product that would be harsh enough to loosen glue without damaging the LEGO. Is it possible to try and pry them apart with an exacto knife or something along those lines? If it was regualr glue like elmers, this should work, if it was something like super glue, I'd just enjoy the model you bought. Quote
bricked one Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 It's probably hot glue or elmers glue, try using an iron to heat it up(put some wax paper between the Lego and the iron), then separate the pieces like "Big Cam" says(don't burn yourself) and scrape out the rest of the glue with an exacto knife or something like that. OR If its hot glue or elmers glue, you can put them in the the fridge for awhile and then the glue will contract and fall off.(I think) If it's Super Glue, try brake cleaner Quote
Modulex Guy Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 If those are store displays, do not even bother trying to take them apart. LEGO uses a glue that melts the bricks to gether to form one giant piece, such as that Bionicle display you have, its now one massive piece. Quote

Well I guess I'll just throw it up on ebay and see if I can get my money back. Thanks for the suggestions! Quote
badboytje88 Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 I've had the same problem with a display set I got. Trying to take it apart is a hell of a job/not possible. I damaged so many parts I eventually quit trying to take them apart. Now I have a half damaged model... I could have had a nice display. So DON'T do it. Quote

Really I got a lego modular firestation display set for half price in the lego store at blue water and it hadn't been glued Quote
Hinckley Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 If the kid used school glue it'd dissolve in water. Try soaking them first... Quote
Modulex Guy Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Really I got a lego modular firestation display set for half price in the lego store at blue water and it hadn't been glued LEGO Store displays are not glued, they are assembled by employees and then sold in grab bags at the end of their store display life. THe glued displays are in stores like target, walmart, and toys r us. Quote

Too late The kid had taken some of the stuff off already, so I figured I would try to salvage what I could. The rubber cement stuff came off pretty easily, so I have a few good pieces that I was able to salvage. There's 3 or 4 Vikings minifigs that I took out, but they don't move since they are glued together. I assume Bionicle stuff is from Toys R Us since that's what it says on the sticker in the back of the baseplate. Quote
Bailey. Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 OUCH!, now that's gonna be hard!. I remember I was trying to unglue a princess keychain, it took me a lot to do it!. First, I used a lot of acetone on the connection with hair & head, after I let the acetone work, I used my nails to separate them. For the torso and skirt piece, It was hard, and the torso got damaged. First, I tried separating the skirt from the torso with a fine razor. Hope this helps ;S Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Like a wise person said already, soak it in water first, if nothing, toss it out! This is gonna be more trouble than it's worth, and since it has already been taken apart... Toss it and save yourself the headache. THIS IS WHY YOU NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER USE GLUE ON LEGO! You have no idea how many times I tell people this and they still glue things. Ahh, the stories I got. Quote
