Your best option is to look at the instructions for “non molded” backed ships already made.

 The black pearl and the barracuda bay ships both don’t use a back piece for them.

 Raised arches of various heights are good for giving the illusion of “more of the ship under the water” and you can choose how much of the rudder you want visible with this method,

Barracuda bay ship is a fantastic example, black pearl...not so much. Probably the ugliest Lego pirate ship made.

Absolutely agree but the back of the pearl crawled so the barracuda could soar 😂.

 Personally I love the much higher arches, looks far better and creates a better “platform” to build the sterncastle on.

Agreed! Barracuda has the best ship "butt" of any ship Lego has ever made)))
