I’m very excited. I have a MB snorlax someone once gifted me that I never felt right building. I’m hoping this theme is great. Be interesting to see the scale of the pokemon (I assume all brick built?) and which pokemon are released first - but I’m going to inevitably buy the enormous pikachu they create!

I saw that Lego was following Pokémon on Instagram yesterday and I thought that was weird. But this is legendary.

I hope it's a proper line of non-extortionate sets not a seeming one off like Zelda.

Never in a million years would I have expected to see an actual LEGO Pokemon theme coming out, there's so much material to choose from that the sky is the limit here. I hope they make this theme a combo of the video games, card game and anime so you got something for fans of all Pokemon media. Hopefully this paves the way for a Yu-Gi-Oh! theme since its the next huge video game, card game and anime series you think about after Pokemon. Really looking forward to seeing what the theme brings!

I have mixed feelings. At one hand, I'm pretty excited because Pokemon is one of my favorite franchises in the world but at the other hand, it seems the theme will go for brick built pokemon and honestly I was hoping to be minifigure sets like Animal Crossing and Zelda. In any case, I look forward for this theme!

Minifigure trainers and brick built pokemon would be the perfect compromise.

I'm hoping it will be at least a mix of some minifigure scale sets and some brick built sets (the jurassic park brick built dinosaurs are pretty good). There could be art sets and all sorts. I'll stay hopeful they will do it well!

Could be well timed. The hype of the trading card game has really peaked lately and lots of adults seem to be getting back into pokemon.

The video does seem to lean towards larger brick built Pokemon but I'd like to see this too.

You could get a lot of mileage out of larger brick built legendaries alongside location sets.

Minifigure scale mini build Pokemon would also be fun too but I guess it just depends how many new parts they'd pump into it to make them look effective.

Saying that though when I was a kid I used to make minifigure sized Pokemon. They were obviously vet blocky but a kids imagination bridges that gap.

Totally surprised by this announcement and intrigued for sure! I have a feeling based on the announcement video that it's going to be more like the Mario sets rather than the minifigure-based Animal Crossing or Zelda sets.

My immediate thought? I'm imagining a Mario-esque starter set with a digital pokeball that can scan and catch brick-built pokemon.

To be fair, Bluey did the same thing and is minifig scale.

I think you're right though, the Pokemon IP is different from Star Wars in that the focus is the pokemon. I can't imagine a scenario where Nintendo wouldn't want people building the pokemon themselves. It's a shame because small pokemon molds with minifig trainers and buildable colosseums and gyms would go so hard.

Nintendo may be the deciding factor as they have a reputation for "innovative" features on their toys, which is of course why they are so protective of collaborations with Funko, etc... but hopefully they (and Lego) are realizing that the minifig-scale toy system literally prints money. I think I can speak for all kids when I say being able to put Pokemon, Marvel, Ninja Turtles, etc... on the Millenium Falcon and play with them cohesively would have blown my mind.

Almost certainly going to be a line of sets—not only because the license is probably expensive, but also because the Pokémon franchise is all about the variety of creatures, rather than focusing as much on one "main character" like Legend of Zelda.

I wouldn't read too much into the teaser as far as what the sets will be like is concerned—I remember the Minions teaser featured a brick-built Minion face that did not end up matching any of the final sets.

Is there a chance for a CMF?

From the teaser this looks like it will be brick built but who knows...

Something akin to the Mario Buildable Figure CMFs would work very well for Pokemon. I'd prefer a Minifigure series though.

A few important quotes from those links:

"In 2026, we’re calling all Pokémon Trainers to get ready to build and catch some of their favorite Pokémon!"

"you get the chance to go on a real LEGO® Pokémon™ adventure"

" a new multi-year partnership"

"This new partnership will bring the world of Pokémon to life in entirely new ways, allowing fans to build beloved Pokémon in LEGO brick form."

"The LEGO Group and The Pokémon Company International both have a long history of pushing the boundaries of social play, which is at the core of this partnership. For the first time, the LEGO Group will be bringing the most loved Pokémon to life in a brand-new way, with play experiences that will delight new and existing fans alike."

Based on how those are worded, it sound like there's going to be some level of actually building some Pokemon, but also some kind of catching/social aspect. Maybe a spin on the Mario digi-figs? An app? In either case, it sounds like it's going to be more than just static models.

[insert Kermit the Frog wildly flapping his arms around-GIF]

OhmyGod, this is such amazing news! :excited:

I hope it will be minfigure scale, mainly, with prominent buildings.
Perhaps some Pokémon as statues (like Harry Potter's Hedwig for example) might be nice, though :sweet:

Mitch

Well, this might just get my sister interested in LEGO. After seeing the teaser, she's listing all the Pokémon she wants them to make. I personally don't care for it, but anything that gets her - and others who don't do Lego - interested in the hobby is a win in my book!

As excited as I am about this new theme, I don't like that Lego almost has a monopoly over the brick-building system. Pokemon was one of the last sizeable properties they had, and while it wasn't Lego, they were adequate products and did what they needed to do. also, Mega was more trigger-happy with new specialized pieces for the mons. more trigger-happy than Lego since 2007.

not opposed to the idea, but competition breeds refinement.

This is really cool and honestly not something I expected to happen at all. Really wild that pretty much of all of Nintendo's biggest franchises are being represented in Lego now (aside from Super Smash Bros I guess, but who knows at this point).

I'm a pokemon & lego fan so should be excited the reality is they can't do minifigure scale pokemon. It's too many moulded pieces so, in reality it will just be big brick built characters which I don't think will blow people away.

What a pleasant surprise! I would love to see minifigures! Not sure about small molded Pokmeon tho, i would be interested to see buildable Pokemon next year before making my best judgement.

The Pokemon license has not been entirely exclusive in building bricks. Keeppley has had the Pokemon license in Asia, while Mega has had it in the West. Not all of the licenses Lego acquires are exclusive licenses. Other brick companies, like Cada and Rastar, are still doing licensed Formula 1 race cars despite Lego acquiring a license to the entire franchise. If Pokemon remains a non-exclusive license and Mega retains the right to make Pokemon sets, then this is a smart move by the Pokemon license holders to expand their market. Otherwise, it's an aggressive move by Lego to cut off one of their main competitors at the knees, just like the rumored acquisition of the Star Trek license was an aggressive move to cut off an emerging competitor (and their main competitor in Germany) at the knees. Just as Star Trek was Bluebrixx's major license, Pokemon and Halo are the two major licenses that have been Mega's bread and butter over the past decade or more. Mega has been doing such a good job with their Pokemon line that I hate to see it go to Lego. The Lego product line will probably be much smaller, less diverse, less long-lived, and more expensive, while being plagued with gray ball joints, too many stickers, and bizarre choices for scaling and play content. On the other hand, it could be a surprise hit like Super Mario, which has generally been a pretty good line despite the frustrating lack of minifigs. I suspect that Lego has taken over the license from Mega instead of sharing it, which is why Mattel (the owner of Mega) is retaliating by moving aggressively to take market share from Lego in the adult building space. Mattel Brick Shop, which launches in May, is marketed as having higher quality than Lego at lower price, and the rumors for its first products are a 1500-piece Mercedes 300 SL. That would be striking directly at Lego's highly successful line of Creator Expert/Icons cars. It'll be interesting to see how this all goes down.
