Hi,

for years I was using same copy-paste technique for embedding images on forum with bbcode. It was working fine. It still works on other forums. But here on Eurobricks my posts do not displays images, just bbcode.

Examples:

I checked next topic to mine from other author and it seems to sufler same problem, only bbcode with no images visible:

I also checked some older posts of mine which I used exactly same bbcode and they are still working fine, images are there. So bug must be only in new posts.

It is forum bug or I am missing some option?

Hi, with the recent forum update, BBCode was disabled. So now to post photos you have to... um...  :shrug_confused: Nobody seems to have informed the members what to do instead.

So. I see that there is a button near "Submit Reply" that says "Other Media". You select that and "insert image from URL". So you may have to paste it in there and remove the BBCode if there is any when you copy+pasted from sites like imgur.

So you just paste the url link now, and the forum takes care of the rest, automatically embedding it as an image (or video, or reddit post, etc.). Make sure the extension is included - the .jpg, .png or whatever.

E.g. if you post " https://i.imgur.com/rVcd1J9.jpeg "

Then the forum will turn it into

rVcd1J9.jpeg

You can revert it to a plain link by clicking the little pop up

Alternately, you could attach the image to the post, but then you will suffer some size restrictions and put extra load on the forum. Better to host it elsewhere and link.

Thanks for the reply. May I ask why it got disabled?

Seems to me like "make user experience harder" change ;)

It is so many clicks now to add a photo... and with many photos it is like... I rather just paste link to gallery...

I have to agree there. Feels like a clear example of upgrades not always making things better so it got me wondering too.
On that last note, I wouldn't be surprised if a link to a gallery is actually preferred. It keeps the load of the forum pages a lot lighter for people who just wanna quickly go over the text.

Hey folks,

yes, BBCode is considered deprecated by newer versions of the Forum software for security reasons.

We basically can't get around it - but you are right, we have not really informed how to work with pictures now.

Flickr

Like @Yoggington and @SERVATOR explained already - you need to extract yourself the URL in the part between the [img][/img] tags and just paste this into the reply.

Bricksafe

Bricksafe offers the resizings via prepared URLs, so one would take one of those with being below the 1024px restriction and also just paste the URL.

----

Edit: The Flickr Example is a good one why BBCode is considered being potentionally harmful: It allows to create links on images which may lead to scam URLs with no obvious sign for a user to know, so "just a wrong click" could do harm to a user.

That's interesting cause I ran into the opposite problem - I pasted an url, then decided to change it, but because there's no bbcode, I couldn't change the address it goes to, only the label.  So I had to delete it all and paste it again.  Otherwise it was linking to the wrong page, but still looked like it was showing the address it'd go to - https://www.google.com for example.

It's also given me problems when quoting people, where I'll accidentally delete the newline after the quote while trimming its contents, and end up entirely unable to move the cursor outside the quote.  Direct code editing is much more comfortable for me than WYSIWG where sometimes there's no way to get what I want.

@Stereo I am also occationally  having the reply box messing up and making it impossible to really edit your post, moving the cursor etc.

Unfortunately, it does not make much sense to dig deeper for the reasons, background of this decision is the vendor has released the next major version of the forum software 2 weeks ago & we like to switch as soon as possible and would like to just start our efforts on the new major version.

I have listed the glitches in the maintenance thread in this forum.

Thank you for pointing out this, I didn't even notice. It has been fixed, @SERVATOR's simple solution works well, many thanks for him!

In flickr, you can also just use the share function instead of the BBcode. This also works all at once, without having to remove anything.

And your photo will be clickable too then, so that's settled too.
