Auroralampinen Posted February 4 Posted February 4 (edited) since everyone is making mini models of bigger sets i decided to join the party here is instructions https://bricksafe.com/files/Auroralampinen/my-lego-projects/instructions/8043 mini model instructions.pdf backstory the 8043 excavator was released in 2010 and its the most complex and only motorized excavator with gearbox so this project started on sunday when i got crazy idea to create small excavator and my pick was the 8043 and i looked the instructions of the 8043 to make the structure as same as on the original and before you start looking your uncles old pitchforks and start complaining that everything is wrong with this model and this dont have tracks well here is reason why the mini version dont use tracks 1 i wanted to keep the gearbox the same as on original and since this is small there is no way to put motors to run the tracks 2 i wanted to keep the 8043 excavator complexity the same so with the tracks this mini model would have just 4 functions 3 the tracks arent good in smooth surfaces 4 and lastly i wanted to keep the play value as same as on the original so i decided to make hard decission of ditching the tracks for wheels so now everyone hopefully understand the downsides of the 8043 mini version with tracks so lets continue with wheels and functions here is functions video:) here s first mode for the gearbox functions 1. outriggers 2. superstructure rotation 3. steering here is second mode functions 1. bucket operation 2. boom second section operation 3. the boom first section operation here is the small detailed cabin with steering wheel and a seat underside of the excavator side view of the excavator back section front section with outrigges lowered turntable rotation shots this can do full 360 degree rotation if you got this far here is some behind the scene stuff i had the 8043 when i was kid i got it as my christmas present when i was about 7 years old 8043 was my only technic model where i did do during building time a lot of mistakes the mini version total building time 3 days the mini version weights about 2kg 8043 mini version is my first working excavator(not counting still in production big excavator) i hope you liked this model and have nice week:) Edited February 8 by Auroralampinen Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 And i forgot to add the picture showing boom reach below the ground:) Well now my day was brightning up i looked the instructions of the 8043 and i accidentaly builded the gearbox function modes same way as the 8043 by swithing foward the turning and chassis functions activate and by switching backwards the boom functions activates and the 8043 uses 8 u joints my mini version uses 11 u joints:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 And yes this is my first ever fully mechanical working excavator and the big under construction one is pneumatic:) and my previous attempts att making mechanical excavator were bad and not perfectly working so this is huge milestone for me and im soo proud of this model and my detail building skills have improved soo much so im really happy how this turned out:) Quote
Timewhatistime Posted February 4 Posted February 4 The colour scheme yellow/black reminds me a little bit of the set 8043, which was a tracked excavator with 4 PF motors and a big bucket. Quote

Auroralampinen Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 And in case you are wondering yes the drive drain to chassis is pretty much the same as on the 8043 so maybe this can handle the motors and tracks and since i did build this as similar structualy to the 8043 its maybe pretty easy to do but i will not release instructions because this is too complicated for making instructions:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 And yes this is great at picking up stuff so digging is working perfectly:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Well i have now started studying how to use studio v2 so this model will maybe get instructions so fingers crossed:) Quote
vascolp Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Sugestion: Use sub-models as much as you can! And sub-sub-models, if it makes sense... It makes instruction creation easier. Creating instructions is harder than creating the model itself... Think on how it will be built and divide. This is probably a particularly useful advice in your case, considering your writing and room organization ... sorry, could not resist! PS: nice MOC! MOCs! Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Well the first chassis design was littlebit cursed so i had to make completely new one and i decided to ditch the my excavator colorfull interior for the original 8043 colorscheme wich was black gray and little hints of blue and red and yellow:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Well now the rear outriggers are done that was a nice geometric nightmare:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Well now the chassis is done that was really painfull and nightmarely process and yes instructions will be free as usual:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 More progress soon this will be gear hell:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Well now the all gears are in place now to the gearbox:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Well now finally the gearbox is done:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 More progress now i have done this 10hours straight with minimal breaks:) Quote
2GodBDGlory Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Wow, that's a long time building straight! It might be worth getting in the habit of taking screenshots to share on here. Win+Shift+S would be the go-to keyboard shortcut for that, and it could be easier and cleaner to do it that way! Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 Well now the superstructure is done next i have to construct the boom and ad few details and lights:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 Well this was kind of amazing finding this model uses more pieces than the 8043 while being a lot smaller this uses about 1400 pieces:) Quote
Mikdun Posted February 7 Posted February 7 I know it's based on 8043 but personally the look and colour skin reminds me of 42053 - Volvo EW160E Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 Boom instructions in progress i tryed making them on studio but it was too difficult so i returned back to stone age and builded another copy of the boom for instructions purposes:) Quote
Auroralampinen Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 Well since im from stone age;) i didn't know the studio v2 can generate steps automaticly this is pretty cool and saves lot of time i just have to install the boom and few detail instructions and maybe the instructions are ready by tomorrow:) Quote
