Vindicare Posted January 18 Posted January 18 (edited) Built both of this year’s offerings. Both were very fun & par for the course for this theme. They’re still distinct enough to be their own build. Live the new toros on MK & Mei. Putting this out there too in case there’s others like me...I just learned all five seasons are on Peacock. Lyichir Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Built the Qilin set yesterday! When the two sets were revealed I wasn't too sure about it, since it reminded me a little of the somewhat blocky and poorly proportioned Lion Guardian set. But having built it I like the Qilin a lot better. The proportions are very solid and the detailing is great too. The new figs are great—I love the monkey/dragon emblem on the back of MK and Mei's jackets, and the new versions of Sandy and Mo (who is back to his old mold with a new expression) are great too. A shame Pigsy is the same as last year, but his food cart is a nice side build. Quote
SpadePie Posted April 5 Posted April 5 According to Fateful_04 on Instagram, we supposedly won't be getting any new Monkie Kid sets in 2026, is this an indication that Monkie Kid is about to be discontinued? Quote
Lyichir Posted April 5 Posted April 5 This is disappointing news if true... I've really enjoyed the theme, enough for it to be one of my favorites many years running. Quote
Lemerbrix Posted April 5 Posted April 5 I mean, I’m not that surprised that MK has finally bitten the dust. It felt like the theme was on it’s way out since the 5th anniversary wave, so, bye monkie kid, I guess, nice knowing you Quote
TeriXeri Posted April 5 Posted April 5 (edited) After the space wave, I sort of lost interest in the theme. Both Monkie Kid and Dreamzzz partially turned into ninjago clones, at least for the vehicle based sets, such is the fate of character-based color schemes I suppose. I think LEGO really needs to change things up a bit for their next action theme and go more consistent across the board instead of per-character. I felt the 2020 Ninjago dumgeon wave did it right (mech/rhino beast also mostly optional), and even 2024/2025 City Space chose a consistent color scheme instead of color-theming their vehicles, so a fleet of interstellar space ships would not be exclusive to the darkblue pilot included, feels like themes of old, instead of the "jelly bean knight , ninja, beast has to drive vehicle of their color" trope. I mean, for Chima it still made sense as there were beast-clans , for ninjago, nexo , or monkie kid, and even dreamzzz, it's purely colored for their named character. Just an example, Classic space had near solid white/red/yellow/blue/black figures, but the vehicles did not turn into red spaceships, there were some variants of course, like grey vehicles with green or blue windows, but they did not go full red spaceships for red pilots. In hindsight, as a huge fan of the theme, even Nexo suffered from too much colored accents on the hero vehicles, moreso later on, but the villains maintained a consistent generic color scheme, at least for their year. It would look a lot more weird to see Macy (red) pilot a yellow or green vehicle of another knight with different colors and emblems, compared to seeing Lavaria or Beast Master control Jestro's Chariot (black red characters on a black/red vehicle) Edited April 5 by TeriXeri Quote
Lion King Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Monkie kid going to be discontinued in 2026? Ugh, i wonder what new themes would be in next year…. That would be a big surprise to see an evergreen theme coming to its end. Quote

Not sure where this is coming from. IIRC ninjago's already had it's 2026 set numbers leak, and it still seems to be pretty popular. I never got any monkey kid sets, but they always had unique designs, it's sad to see the theme go. Quote

Ninjago is not going anywhere, it’s a huge hit! if people would like me to go into detail about my thoughts on monkie kid’s decline, let me know! Quote

Now Monkie Kid and DreamZzz potentially meet thier ends in 2026.i wonder what will happen after thier ends in 2026 - I would love to see more new in-house themes. Quote

Classic Space had few or no named characters, so when you have a military organization, they just have one colour scheme across the board. The Dreamzzz villains ended up with better colour coherence cause mostly it's just "dreamlings", not specific bad guys. Quote
karrit Posted April 8 Posted April 8 (edited) I'd love to see some new in house themes that aren't so Mech intensive. Or so totally out there. I bought some Monkie Kid sets that interested me as well as some Dreamzzz Sets but the over emphasis on Mechs in both themes kept me from buying into the whole theme for either one. I just bought some of the individual sets that appealed to me. Mostly it was more that I was interested in acquiring some of the new parts that came out of those sets. The way out there premise is what also kept me from having any interest in Nexo Knights or Chima when they were a thing. Honestly I don't get how Ninjago keeps going so strong when people are clamoring for more Castle, Space, Western, Pirates that aren't otherworldly based but more like the Classic sets from years ago. I had a small Pirate Island at a show a few weeks back that had a lot of interest for such a small classic style build. Edited April 8 by karrit Quote
hikouki Posted April 9 Posted April 9 I really loved the fact that MK had characters from Chinese legends. I very much preferred it over Dreamzzz. I do wonder how much longer Ninjago will last? Quote

We have to remember that Ninjago is the exception not the rule when it comes to in-house action Lego themes, typically they just last a few years. I don't know if Lego has ever talked too much about why that is but I'm sure they have their reasons, it's probably easier to get kids interested in a new theme because it's just more exciting and interesting when it's new and they're growing up with it the whole time, and cycling through original themes give them more room to experiment and be creative. If anything I think it's a testament to Monkie Kid's success that it lasted this long, I'm not sure any action theme has lasted this long since Ninjago? That all said though, it is sad to see it go. I haven't bought any MK sets in a few years but I really appreciate how unique the theme has always felt thanks to its cultural influences being pretty different from something like Ninjago. I hope we get some kind of successor series, maybe a little more focused on locations if possible (not expecting that though obviously lmao). Quote
Lyichir Posted April 10 Posted April 10 To be honest I don't see why we're rushing to find something to blame for Monkie Kid ending, especially when a 5+ year lifespan is already pretty exceptional as far as original story themes are concerned (Ninjago, Friends, and Bionicle are some of the only story themes that have lasted longer). I dunno... I'm sad that it's ending, but people rushing to blame it on their pet peeves sure doesn't help matters. I'd rather celebrate it for what it was than let the news make me bitter. Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted April 14 Posted April 14 What are the chances MK will be replaced by another theme based on a literary classic? The recent success of Ne Zha 2 proves there‘s a big market for adaptations of such works. (Also quite funny, considering Nezha is also a character in MK!) Quote
icm Posted April 14 Posted April 14 (edited) Since I've mentioned Journey to the West and Don Quixote in the same post before, I think it would be pretty funny if Monkie Kid was replaced by a present-day-fantasy mechs-and-creatures theme inspired by Cervantes. Call it, I dunno, "Quixxie Quest"? HEY! Dulcinea is trapped on top of a wind turbine! Build the suit of power armor and the mechanical war horse! Put Quixxie Don inside and charge the power plant! The new Quixxie Quest collection from Lego! Edit - I know that's nothing like the windmill scene in the actual Quixote, but Don Quixote charging at windmills is a cultural meme beyond the actual scene in the book. Edited April 14 by icm Quote

Yeah, it's a shame there's not more but Lego themes aren't designed to last forever. Even Ninjago had a planned ending and Ninjago is very much the exception and not the rule!
