We have seen the return of infamous Captain Redbeard in Pirates of Barracuda Bay, but where was his loyal First Mate Rummy? Propably had too much rum again, got marooned on a ramshackle Renegade's Raft, and woke up in the middle of the ocean, fighting with a big shark, and an even bigger headache, just like before, in a set from 1991:

But now, the raft have recieved a substantial update:

Why just have a flimsy flag and a pair of paddles, when you can have a full Gaff rigged sail, a steering Oar, and fishing rod! Rummy was also wise enough to bring a compass and spyglass to know where he's going. A parrot also perched on the mast top, so old Rummy has someone to talk to, and there's a bottle of unknown contents. Might be drinking water, might be the remainder of his rum binge that ended in this misadventure, or something else? You decide! Overall, it's a simple redesign, of a simple old set. Hope you like it me Mateys!

I like how only by switching the blacks into browns all these sets look instantly much better! For this entry my suggestion would be to skip the black brackets which add the unnecessary half plate height. Use some SNOT bricks in the construction of the logs and place the4x4 or even better 4x6 plate directly on them. As for the mast, I don't like the DBG mixel joint which pops out too much. Maybe do all the connecting plates in that color or figure out some other way to mount the sail ... which could also be smaller and use even just a cape or flags. The two plates thickness makes it huge compared to the raft.

Renegades raft is a fave of mine!

Iv also included a rebuild of this into my entry as part of the “play” feature.

so let’s review!

pros:

love the colour change to brown

love the wood pieces (used those too!)

absolutely love the sail inclusion, really feels like a modern update for a small set including the brick built sail.

cons:

My one complaint is the inclusion of the gun clip on the sail, feels a tiny bit unnecessary but to each there own!

Again this really understands the scope of the competition and is one of the better entries so far!

Thanks, but I like it how it is. I made the joint Bley because TLG never made it in other colors, and it adds more colours other than black and white. As for the Sail, I can't use capes, it was made in LDD and rendered in Bricklink Studio. Besides, I don't think it's too big. It's a good size for catching a lot of wind.

Thank You for an excellent review. Lets just say Rummy tied the musket to the mast, so that the powder charge in it won't get damp.

A good impulse set.

Theme (story)

This looks like a raft, and a credible build, with food, animals aplenty and alcohol! Now one problem with it (and the original) is the factory-look ; maybe try to make the sails look used a little more, with for instance a tattered-look using white flag pieces, as others have said the current ones are too large and thick, which is more fitting for a merchant ship than a makeshift raft.

Build

The raft is an improved version of the original one, with better colour choices and a good usage of a variety of thin parts for the build's smaller details. but I feel like too much brown makes for an overly modern pirate, maybe try to spice it up with a blue pirate like in the original? Those pristine white sails don't fit whit the whole brown/used aesthetic, I would try some other colour that would fit in with the lower parts, I know we already mentioned this in another thread, but tan would look really good, here in particular since it would make the build fit the story (most sails back then weren't clean white). Finally, I'm a fan of the small gun emplacement, it's a common play feature in modern sets.

It's hard to see, but Rummy's torso/jacket is actually dark blue..

I didn't want to write for someone else's project at all, because I'm competing too, but this turned out great! This set could not have been done any better. I love it! 👍😉🏴☠️🍻

This is really nice.  The log profile tiles are a huge upgrade.  In general, this just "feels" like an official set: simple, filled with charm, lots of play features, and the parrot, shark and accessories make for some great natural storytelling.  The dark blue minifigure is the best kind of upgrade, modern without losing any of what made the original great.

There's room for improvement in a couple places:

  • The clip-connected-to-clip for the oar is a bit awkward and seems like it would get knocked off.
  • The parrot isn't actually connected, a 1x1 round plate with open stud or something similar would provide a good perch.
  • A couple parts on the sail are connected by only one or two studs and look like they might be fragile.  Also, I'm not a huge fan of the use of different angles in the leech.  I might consider a cloth sail here instead.  All that said, the inclusion of a sail is an excellent addition to this set.
  • As others mentioned, the mixel joint at the bottom of the sail is very bright and "pops" compared to the rest of the set.  Changing this to dark bluish gray might be all that's needed; or perhaps see if you can attach the mast with clips instead.

The fishing pole is great, it's such a natural addition to the set, and so well connected.  Well done!

Why?

I have withdrawn from the contest, because I believe it's unfair for other entries to be frontpaged, or getting an unsolicited help from outside. I've withdrawn, because my moral principles won't allow me to stand for unpunished cheating and favouritism. I've withdrawn, to make a statement about the sordid lack of any regulation or rule enforcement in this mess of a contest.

Do you have anything concrete, because you haven't written anything so far, and I'm wondering what the problem is, whether or not I should ignore this competition. Have you contacted the organiser about this? What did he say?
