I think this new set looks fantastic, I definitely would like a complete set of airships for all of the Koopalings

I sort of doubt they'll get around to making all of them but it's prime MOC material. I might give building the others ago once the instructions to these two are published and I can get a better idea of how they're built and how to adapt the others to a similar scale.

They couldn't use 2x2 circle tiles in these cannons, since they're smaller cannons made with Belville-style buckets (which don't have studs inside like the 3x3 cylinders used for the larger airship).

You're right. I had expected them to be the same pieces used in Bowser's Airship but later read about these rarely used pieces on Brickset. That's also where I saw the lifestyle image where you can see a not so camera friendly angle of the cannons. It looks very toyish...

it'll be a huge shame if this line ends without King Bob-omb, King Whomp, Petey Piranha, Gooper Blooper, and Prince Bully

very big missed opportunity

IKR! I especially need my boy king bob-omb in Lego form, he just doesn’t get referenced as much in Mario media nowadays, despite bob-omb battlefield being one of Mario’s most iconic levels, I was really happy when king bob-omb appeared in the super Mario bros movie, and we need him in Lego! #wewantalegokingbob-omb

So it looks like that mystery 18+ set is a big piranha plant.

Sounds neat, I hope there’s a feature that makes it open and close its mouth and go in and out of a pipe. That honestly might even be the deal breaker for me unless the build is amazing.

Hmm, I’m mixed on this, I initially didn’t like the mighty bowser, but I have since changed my opinion on him, maybe the ucs piranha plant will be similar to the mighty bowser and be very functional. Also, the recently revealed airships are set to retire December of next year, very odd…

That Roy MOC is good.

I'm hoping the piranha plant will be decent for the price to piece ratio they have. Bowser is an amazing set - build, functions, looks - so I hope they can keep that up, although at 'only' $65 it won't have the same presence. Will that make it better, because it's more elegant, or worse, because it's too small?

With a bit of luck (crossing fingers) we get Roy with it. That would be a nice surprise. I don’t know why Lego has a policy of not giving the full roster in almost any theme anyways. Is that to frustrate fans? Or some sort of encouragement to build or own stuff?

I don't think that set has any brickbuilt figs. I think that he will come in the 2024 winter wave.

As for the whole theme interestingly the Mighty Bowser's life span was extended, it is interesting because it is the only set going past 2024's December.

I don't think it's a "policy" so much as the desire to spread certain types of characters out between sets and waves, rather than going through it all in one go and leaving fewer directions to go from there. With the Koopalings in particular they've tended to have just one per set as "boss characters" until this upcoming airship set (much like how in the games you tend to face one Koopaling in each world rather than facing them all at once).

I get that, but i thought this was going to be the last wave. Or am i wrong here? Because otherwise i understand those choices (understand, but don’t approve x-D)

With Super Mario RPG being rereleased soon, I wonder if the usage of those characters moving forward might lead to them getting Lego versions made.

A Lego Mallow would have blown my 11 year old mind back in 1996.

this is what I'm wanting most of all, for them to delve into the more obscure spinoff characters

with Mallow, I've made attempts at turning the Lakitu cloud face into a Mallow moc, but the piece type makes it tricky

I'd really love to see characters like Fawful or the Shroobs or the X-Nauts from the other RPG series, even though I'm certain it'll never happen

Mallow is a tough character to get down in general due to his lack of middle, usually most illustrations I've seen of him have him either as too elongated or too squishy.

Paper Mario would be an interesting concept to do, but I wonder if it would make more sense to keep the characters as more two-dimensional, while building a 3D world around them?

Well, we get new Mario sets in january. Of course, it could finally be minifig orientated, but i think it’s just digifig style once again.

I just checked - the PPP was usually pretty close to 10c per part, except for the Dixie Kong set. So, I don't think it's necessarily indicative of minifigs.

Will Super Mario theme end next year?

Nobody’s too sure at this point. There was a while where it really looked like it was either changing to minifigures or getting outright replaced by Sonic, but everything about this theme is currently surrounded by a whole lot of uncertainty.
