What Baseplate would you use for a Star Wars City?

I can't decide what color baseplates I should for a Star Wars theme city/display.

Classic Gray is easy to find, but not sure? Maybe some tan or sand color?

What would you use?

I think tan works the best, but gray will also look good.

The gray ones give you more space since they are larger.

Tan can work, but they are not in production at the moment (at least according to the Lego Shop@Home site).  The currently specialty colour in production at the moment (aside from the standard Gray, Green and Blue) is white.

So, depends on what type of city you want I suppose.

Desert city, get Tan.  More urban and paved/built up city, get the Gray.  Something more Naboo like?  Get Green.

Don’t forget white for a hoth display :)

But actually  it can be any color if you put enough plates/tiles on it.

Tan is good, but I wouldn't even use baseplates. If you ask me, plates are the best option.

Yes, I thought about this option. I could even paint the table and get "artistic" on it. Something like this.

How much of an sacrilege is it, to use non-LEGO baseplates, like the ones from Strictly Briks?

I suppose that would depend on what the baseplate is. If it is a custom design or a now discontinued baseplates, I suppose it wouldn't be that bad, though if it is a clone part of a Lego piece than that is a grey area. It is even more of a grey area if it is a grey baseplate.

Clone baseplates are very available, more so in the mainstream than other pieces. I know Kmart here still sells clone road baseplates alongside its real Lego ones.

Really, without knowing what specific part of Star Wars you want to emulate for your display, it's hard to judge a best baseplate colour. Grey is a good baseline, but for Tatooine/Geonosis/Jakku you'd want tan baseplates, for Kamino you'd probably want blue baseplates, for Endor you'd want green, Rhen Var you'd want white, etc. (do white baseplates even exist?)

Don't forget, a few cleverly placed plates can join baseplates. You could very easily do multiple colours for different parts of the display, depending on how much space you have.

I agree, and yes, white baseplates do exist.

HERESY! SACRILIGE! BLASHPEMY! 

The only thing that really matters is you're fine with it. Personally I just use official lego, but if you want to use non-lego ones, no one's going to break into your home and remove the fake lego. It'll definitely save you some money if you do so, too.

Yeah, there are white baseplates. There's actually a way to combine plates and baseplates too, if you put tiles under the baseplates (or honestly just paper or something to get it more exact), they're roughly as high as plates.

Tan works so well for so many areas and seems to have an extra sharpness to it when set up compared to the grays and blacks.

White is a must for Hoth though as others have mentioned.

Black also comes in nice for things you are trying to show "space under", but I resort to cloth for that sparring the cost of baseplates.  Cloud city sits and an all black space which helps separate the colors a bit as well.
