lostdriveway Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Wow it's looking fantastic! Yes we will have to look into what pieces are available but I think I prefer the darker purple! Quote
BlackStar Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Works for me! :-) kevkipo--You can find Bluerender here: http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=109972 It's really easy to use. You forgot to mention how incredibly fast it is compared to POVRay ;) Quote
Actor Builder Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 What's up? The roof. Oh. Yeah! I guess it is. Good work. Thanks. Quote
Ashnflash Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Wow just came across this! Incredible job! I'm looking forward to using this for an Ideas thing I've got planned! I'm assuming the Blue Render thing still works with LDD being shut down or whatever is happening to it... Quote
Xon67 Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 Yes, it will still work. It's a bit late for me to suggest improvements in the LDD topic, though... :-) Quote
Xon67 Posted January 24, 2016 Author Posted January 24, 2016 (edited) Here's a rough first pass at the tower. Not everything is aligned correctly and the colors are nowhere near final. This is going to be interesting to figure out, since there are no clear views of it all the way around. Near as I can tell, though, the outside and the inside of the tower seem to match up in the show. Edited January 24, 2016 by Xon67 Quote
ritzcrackerman Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 (edited) I'm totally digging this. Is this something you're planning on posting for others to use when complete? I'm *not* one of those people who make a habit of hassling builders / designers for their instructions - but I would love to build this. James Edited January 29, 2016 by ritzcrackerman Quote
Xon67 Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 (edited) ritzcrackerman--I'll post it for everyone when it's done. lostdriveway—I’ve been looking at part colors and have two things to pass along, including a decision from you… First, I’m changing the color around the windows from dark tan to tan. The 1 x 1 with Stud on 1 Side (87087) comes in tan and not dark tan. A 1 x 1 x 6 Round with Square Base (43888) doesn’t come in tan or dark tan. I substituted three Round Pin Joiners without Slot (53293 / 75535), which only comes in tan and not dark tan. So, we're tan now, cool? Second, to create the look of window panes, I used an Ingot (13954 / 99563) in white. This part doesn’t come in white, only medium stone gray and several metallic colors. You can get a bunch of these (and they wouldn’t be that cheap, considering how many are needed) and paint them white, or go with any of the other approaches shown here. At the top is the original window in dark tan with the white ingots for window panes. The middle row shows 1 x 2 flat tiles in place of the ingots as well as two options using window panes. The bottom row shows several options using clear bricks and plates. I think the one on the bottom right is the cleanest--it uses 1 x 2 bricks without a bottom tube (3065) turned sideways. AND--these bricks are way cheaper than the ingots. Please let me know which of these windows you like best and I’ll update the entire mansion with whatever you choose. Xon67 Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 (edited) Will do! I'm also working on the best parts to use to get the roof line correct. There aren't any angled plates in either purple that work. In the meantime, I'll finish the details on the main mansion, get that file to you, and then continue with the tower. Have you had any progress on building the greenhouse? Edited February 10, 2016 by Xon67 Quote
bitbamboo Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 You two are terrific! Thanks for making public the challenge. The greenhouse looks great and the renders are VERY interesting Please let us know the name of the roof color, if (brickset naming) the 75904-standard Medium Lilac or the Bright Reddish Violet. I understand that choice is limited by the Tower Roof piece but you could as well take the difficult road of a tiled roof, as this one http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=102451 Quote
Xon67 Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 (edited) Hi Bitbamboo--The color in LDD is 268 Medium Lilac. lostdriveway likes this color the best, however I still haven't done all of my homework regarding availability of all of the pieces we'll need to get the roofline correct. I'm trying to finalize the roof and the chimneys and I know we'll have to make some decisions regarding the colors, since there isn't a wide variety of plates and tiles in that color. I plan to build a tiled version of the Tower Roof piece, since it's too small for the actual scale of the build. I have it on the tower now just as a place-holder. :-) My final version won't be as fancy as the one you're linking to, but it will be the same general idea. lostdriveway--I think we'll want to change the columns on the windows. The connector tubes (shown on the bottom left) I originally selected to replace the 1x1x6 columns (shown on top) go for $1.50 each and we'll need 6 of them for each window . I switched them to 1x1 round bricks (bottom right). Much cheaper. Does that work for you? Edited February 10, 2016 by Xon67 Quote

Yep haha I'm happy for the cheaper options across the board - this thing is going to be huge and will probably take me a year just to be able to afford to brick build it all! Haven't started on the greenhouse yet - a big christmas period (with my birthday just after it) has slowed my Lego buying and building for the moment - as I will need to bricklink quite a few pieces. Looking forward to getting started soon though! Quote
Xon67 Posted February 14, 2016 Author Posted February 14, 2016 (edited) Replaced all of the windows and finalized the brick colors and greebling on the main mansion. Still need to finish the roof and the clock tower. lostdriveway--let me know if you prefer to show missing bricks in the columns using black 1x1 round bricks (as seen on the left) or clear (middle and right). Silverwolf28 Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Great looking set. This looks better than the mystery mansion imo. Quote
Actor Builder Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Looks good! What if you used transparent bars to hold up the floating columns? Would that look better? Quote
Freakshow Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 This is AMAZING. Can't wait to see the finished product. Quote

I think clear works pretty well and also from a distance would give the impression that the bricks are missing! Looks amazing! Quote
Xon67 Posted February 25, 2016 Author Posted February 25, 2016 Okay, I have almost finished the main mansion. I have reviewed almost all of the rare-colored pieces and have replaced anything that does not exist with pieces that do exist. (However--I can't guarantee how much they are going to cost.) Part count is at 11,307 for the greenhouse and mansion combined. I still have to work on the interior supports--right now the roof is mostly floating in mid-air--and finish the bell tower, which is going to be very large all by itself... Quote

ezaida18 Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Wow, that's amazing. Good job! I just bought the Scooby Doo Haunted Mansion set myself and looking at the above, do you think they'll come up with a proper Mansion building (the center/main structure of your build)? Or has anyone combined that set with the Monster Fighters Haunted House? Quote
